Importance of the Resume Format and Layout

Heading - Resume Objective

Your resume heading should describe the job title that you are seeking. For instance, if you are an elementary teacher, the heading of your resume should be: Elementary School Teacher or Elementary Educator.

If you are a new teacher or a career changer, your resume heading should still describe the position you are applying for. For instance, if you are a new graduate applying for a high school math position, your resume heading will read something like: High School Mathematics Teacher or Secondary Math Teacher. The position you are wishing to secure is your resume objective.

Resume Profile or Summary

A profile, which appears at the beginning of your resume, is a concise paragraph or bulleted list. This career summary should include the top qualities you can bring to the education position.

This section could be called an introductory paragraph or summary of qualifications. Resume profiles are usually five to six lines in length. Each sentence needs to reflect on either your years of experience, related skill sets, or your ability to shape a dynamic school environment.

After the profile section, many resumes will include a table or other formatting style to include an "Areas of Expertise", "Core Competencies", "Areas of Strength" or "Areas of Knowledge" section. Here is an example:

This short section that lists your key skills in education should directly follow your strong professional profile. The combination of the professional profile and areas of expertise make for a great first impression and strong beginning to your teaching resume.

Education and Credentials

The more general your resume, the higher the chance you will be overlooked and placed in a pile with other non-distinguishing teacher resumes. Get the attention of your reader early by highlighting your teaching credentials and education front and center on your resume.

First, list your degrees. If you have taken special courses such as Adolescent Psychology or Early Childhood Development, note them. Also list any relevant certifications such as Working With Young Adults With ADHD or Preparing Students for AP Exams, and so forth. If you are writing a high school science teacher resume or middle school music teacher resume, for example, list the special certifications, programs, and technologies you have training in.

You want your reader to easily know that you are qualified to teach in your subject area. So, unless your credentials are dated and you are a very experienced educator, your education and certifications should be listed before your experience section.

Teaching Experience or Relevant Work Experience

This section is where you will list the places you worked, as well as the location, dates employed, and your job title. Make sure those items are bolded or one font size higher to make them stand out and reflect on their significance.

After, you will lay out your job responsibilities in a concise and matter-of-fact manner. Usually, this would be organized in chronological order, from newest to oldest. The organization of your teacher resume will depend on your background. Instruct 1st grade curriculum, designing lesson plans and developing programs to meet the academic, intellectual and social needs of students. Instruct ELA, Math in Low- and High-level phases, Science, Social Studies, Technology, Current Events, and Character Education. Assess student performance through anecdotal records, student-teacher conferencing, peer evaluation, checklists, and student portfolios.

Develop and implement individualized education programs for each special education student. Identify and implement goals tailored to the student's individual needs and abilities. Coordinate with parents, teachers, teacher assistants, and various service providers, including speech, occupational, and physical therapists for students who have High Functioning Autism, Asperger's Syndrome, developmental delays, speech impairments, or learning disabilities within resource and general education classrooms.

Examples would include an increase in student grade point average, reduction in absenteeism, securing a grant, increasing the grade level of a few at-risk students, etc., depending on the position you are targeting.

Regardless of the achievement, make sure you explain how you accomplished it. List these in bullet point format to set them apart from the rest of your duties. Try to find at least a couple of achievements for each position.

This section should include any important courses, workshops, in-service training, or seminars that you have taken that is related to your teaching career.
