Securing a Teaching Job Overseas
Time and The Right Tools Are All You Need
For many teachers, traveling and working overseas is a dream job that will never be fulfilled. However, if you have a real passion for travelling, experiencing different cultures, and are up for a challenge, you can turn your dream into a reality. There are many opportunities available for individuals who wish to teach overseas, and all you need to know is how to take advantage of them and to take aggressive action. Whether it is an ESL, EFL, TEFL, TESL, or TESOL teaching job, or finding your next English teaching jobs you need an excellent resume and cover letter.
Follow these steps, and you could find yourself in an overseas teaching position.
Step 1 – Select a Country of Interest
The first thing you should do when trying to get a teaching job abroad is determine which country you would like to teach in. In nearly every country across the globe, there are opportunities to share your expertise as a teacher, so think carefully and pick the one that is right for you. You may have always wanted to live in Italy, or perhaps France would suit you better. Whatever the options are, take time to decide – this will let you limit your teacher job search to a limited area.
If you are considering teaching abroad in a country where English is not the official language, but a small amount of people do speak it, you should learn some of the native language. If you decide on a country that has an official language other than English, it would be beneficial to learn some language before you move there, at least for conversational purposes initially.
Step 2 – Perform an Internet Search
After you have selected a country of interest, you should perform a search online to find valuable information. Use key terms such as "Teaching abroad in…" to locate job listings in the country of interest. There are some sites that have job postings for teaching abroad in all countries across the globe, while others specialize in certain countries or regions.
Step 3 – Compose a Strong Resume and Cover Letter
Once you have used the Internet to locate some job openings that interest you, create a teacher resume and cover letter to include in your applications. Make sure you list, any type of teaching experience that you may have or any type of relevant skills in your teacher resume. Even if you are not a certified teacher in your home country, you may still be able to obtain a teaching job abroad. Just be sure to play up any training experience you have. You want the school to recognize you have experience in educating or mentoring people to some degree. Include relevant educational keywords in your job search documents; this is critical to having your resume reviewed by an actual person, rather than it just being scanned. Many times resumes and cover letter are just scanned by a machine and if they don't include keywords they don't reach the human eye.
Also, be sure to list any travel experience abroad and language skills you may possess, no matter how limited. Schools may be hesitant to hire you if you have no previous travel experience. Traveling or having lived overseas previously indicates to the school you don't mind being away from home for extended periods of time. This is sometimes a common requirement when you teach overseas.
Step 4 – Apply to Several Schools
Don't limit your application to just one school, you don't want to sit around and wait for a job to come through. Applying to a number of schools will allow more opportunities to present themselves… resulting in a quicker job search.
