There are straightforward ways that you can implement technology into your daily lesson plans. Here are four easy ways for you to implement technology into your classroom:
1. Use Technology for the Basics
Even though exciting advancements are popping up regularly, it is good to remember that you need to take computers back to the basics. No longer do students write their essays on lined paper or in booklets. They use laptops or desktop stations to complete their written work and take exams.
The Internet is another source that needs to be remembered for its most vital uses – research. Never mind Facebook, Twitter, and other such websites. The Internet is a wonderful tool for locating books, articles, websites, and other resources to help complete class projects and conduct independent studies.
Remind your students that although Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel may not seem as exciting compared to newer software and websites, these more traditional programs play a fundamental role in education and self-development.
2. Help Students Develop Individual Skills
Even though today’s students are brought up using computers, not all individuals can operate these machines at the same level. If you find one of your pupils is struggling with keyboarding, researching, or using certain software programs, provide them with one-on-one tutoring to help overcome roadblocks and strengthen essential skills.
Once the student has the basics down, it’s much easier to advance in other areas. On the other hand, if you notice one of your students is excelling in a particular technological area, help them find opportunities to enhance these skills even further and put them to good use.
Perhaps you can employ their talents for the next big school event or fundraiser. Regardless of the skill or subject area that someone flourishes in, you must nurture and encourage the individual’s gifts.
3. Initiate Solo Projects that Allow Students to Shine
Independent assignments are a great way to help pupils discover their own capabilities and interests. By giving them the chance to use a wide variety of mediums or explore various forms of technology, you can introduce students to a new world with many possibilities.
Ask students what topics are important to them, and encourage them to brainstorm ideas on how they would like to approach their concept and represent themselves. For instance, you may want to let your class choose from conducting in-depth research, developing a web-based project, producing an informative video, or the like. Make certain your school has the resources before you throw out certain ideas.
If the school lacks the necessary equipment, look elsewhere in the school district or inquire with the local businesses about borrowing or renting certain hardware or software.
4. Organize Group Projects that Incorporate Technology
This tip is similar to the one above; however, group projects compared to solo assignments can allow students further use of technology. These group assignments are also fundamental for helping individuals develop communication, interpersonal, team building, and problem-solving skills.
Students are encouraged to use technology to learn and present their ideas via different methods. They are required to cooperate with their classmates, respect diverse opinions, and discover ways to resolve conflict – all are important skills essential to the students’ growth and future.
Some group projects you may wish to initiate with your class include: developing a multimedia (print, 2D graphic, 3D animation) project on a current event, organizing an online magazine about a certain time period or scientific topic, etc. Ensure all students are involved in all aspects of the assignments: creative input, research, editing, composition, and proofing.
