Well reseaching how to write a resume I found out that it is important to include accomplishments. Does anyone have any examples of what accomplishments are and where would you include them?

 Thanks

Stan

Hello, that is a great question... and yes, accomplishments on your resume are extremely important. If you go this this link you will find samples of resumes and after reviewing them you will see the accomplishments are listed under each job description.

Hi Stan, I have a business resume that lists accomplishments.  I divided my accomplishments into categories such as operations, technology, supervision, training, budget and so on.  I listed the accomplishments in each area under the appropriate category.  I did list them in order beginning with my most current position. Here is a little slice of one category so you can see the kind of accomplishments I included.

Management resources
•    Managed special education resources to effectively reduce operating expenditures in travel and printing by 25% and 45% respectively.
•    Produced first procedure manual for eleven positions in the Exceptional Student Services Funding Unit.
•    Developed and implemented an application to ensure timely invoicing and reporting from Department of Education grant recipients.
•    Developed a contract database to track services, payments, renewal dates, and contact information

It took me a long time to put this all together but I like the format.  I'm a new teacher and don't feel like I have any real accomplishments in education yet.  So I am using the traditional format.

Thank you for much for sharing your strategy, it does make sense. I have been working on my resume with the information you and Candace provided.

Good luck with your job search,

Stan

Hi, let me tell you that I just updated my resume this week. Mine was skin and bones (and I have been teaching for 4 years).  I have never been good at resumes, but I got a few retired teachers to look at it and help me.  Now I feel like I have a winning resume..

Think about all of the accomplisments you've had - maybe it's being on a campus improvement team, head of Safety Patrol. What trainings have you been in that have helped you? It is very important that you say how it benefited you in that position instead of just saying what you did.  For example, I teach computers and I put on my resume that the specials team created unit plans. Well that wasn't specific enough, so I highlighted what I had them doing for that unit in my room (internet explorer, word and the paint applications). Again, it is about how you are contributing to the success of the students in school.  So anything you come up with, ask yourself, how, why and example. That really helped get the ball rolling for me!

Candace,

I am now in my third year of substitute teaching. As a teacher who is seeking a permanent position with a school district, what accomplishments should I be thinking about to include on my resume? As a substitute teacher you are not really part of a school community where you can actively participate and contribute as a member.

Any suggestions would be helpful.  Thanks. Linda

Great to see you posting to the forum Linda. Question for you.. have you had long-term substituting positions... or are they all short-term? What grade level?

Thanks

I had one long-term substitute position in second grade for a month. I was also hired temporarily to teach kindergarten for three months when the teacher went on maternity leave. Otherwise, the substitute positions have been for a day, couple days, week or two weeks.

Hi Linda:

You will find that your accomplishments will be more generalize, rather than specific... you can look at this substitute teaching resume by clicking on the following link.
http://sample-teacher-resume.com/substitute-teacher-resume.htm
a few other general accomplishments maybe:

** Successfully accomplished taking over all math classess and held full responsiblity for all    aspects of teaching including the accurate daily updating of lesson plans, testing, grading, dicipline, and record keeping.

** Substitute taught regular classes covering various curricula and assimilating a variety of teaching styles in all grade levels.

Hope this helps,

question Re: Accomplishments on Resume (kimsaylor)

Hi everyone.

I've looked at the sample resumes on this sight and they have helped a lot.  But I wondered what I should do if I have done a lot of subbing over the years?  I have held 5 different long-term sub positions (12 weeks each), have done lots of daily subbing at different school districts, and have my student teaching and practicum experience.  My question is do I list all of that?  Or how do I list it so it is concise and not all over the place?  Right now, I have my resume set up listing each long-term sub position, each practicum, and student teaching position, then I summarize my daily subbing, but I list it for each district I've subbed for (there are 4 districts).  Is this too confusing?  Is there a better way, but yet get all the experience incorporated into the resume?    I also have previous work experience (computer training) that I have included as well.  Not too much listed but a couple of those jobs.

Any help would be appreciated.  I need to start sending out my resumes soon for next year positions.

Kim
