A successful job search is a matter of having an optimistic attitude. A positive attitude is the cause of a successful job search, not the result. It’s just common sense that the more negative you are about your own abilities, your job prospects, the schools you apply to work for, and life in general, the less likely you are to land a job. Employers want teachers who believe in themselves and their skills, who want to work, who want to work for them, and who generally have a positive attitude.
If you have a negative attitude toward your job search, it will transcend into every aspect of your search as well as your life. Even if you land an interview for a job that you want; if you are still generally negative about your chances of getting the job, employers will sense this. Your negativity will spill over into your answers and your general demeanor during the interview and ruin your chances of getting the job. Your negativity will turn into a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you believe you will fail, you probably will.
So how do you fix this? …By maintaining a positive attitude. While maintaining a positive attitude is vital to your job search, there will be times when you get discouraged. There are many things, however, that you can do to bring your positive outlook back and keep it in good shape. For instance, avoid worrying about the future. This is a habit that can be broken by focusing on your goals and dreams rather than your fears, as well as by living in the now. Start your days by doing something you enjoy because the start of your day sets the mood for everything that follows. Finally, surround yourself with positive, supportive people because attitude is contagious.
